Puppies, like children, need socialization so they can develop self confidence and become comfortable with new situations.  Noah's Ark Animal Hospitals have always offered free socialization opportunities to "our" puppies.  These are offered twice a month, on Saturday afternoons, and are orchestrated by Arleen Schadle and Toni Doyle, two experienced veterinary assistants and dog lovers.  You can expect your puppy to meet new people, new puppies and new challenges at these sessions.   Please try to attend at least one before your puppy is 5 months old.  Check with a receptionist about the exact dates and times our next classes will be held.  Your pup will need to have had a bordatella vaccine and two distemper-parvo vaccines to be allowed to attend.

Canine Blood Drive

Canine Blood Drive

Events: 1

Noah's Ark Animal Hospitals are proud to work with Blue Ridge Veterinary Blood Blank. Approximately every two to three months, some of our patients provide this service to the community. Each drive is held at one of our two locations. Please speak with a team member to obtain our next blood drive date.

Here are some questions you may have:

Why is it important to donate?

Healthy donors are needed to give blood for the many pets who need it.

A single donation can be used to save up to 4 lives, because the blood can be separated into two components, red blood cells and plasma.  The components are given to patients suffering from anemia, injury or disease.

How long will it take?

The blood collection process, an almost completely painless procedure, will take about 10-20 minutes. Your pet will not be sedated and only a small percentage of his or her blood will be donated.

How often can my pet donate?

Animals could donate blood without any problems as often as every 3 weeks. You will only be asked to come in every 4 or 5 weeks. Immediately after donations, the body starts to replace the blood that was given.

REQUIREMENTS FOR BECOMING A BLOOD DONOR:

  • A healthy canine weighing 35 pounds or more and between the ages of 9 months and 7 ½ years. (A dog may remain in the program until they reach the age of 8 ½ years. Therefore, a dog must be no older than 7 ½ years to make the required one year commitment.)
  • Blood donors must have no history of serious diseases, and cannot be on medication.
  • A commitment to donate 9 times over the course of one year. (Dogs can safely donate as often as every three weeks.)
  • Donors must be brought to our facility or to a blood drive location. If you are not in our area, please contact us; we may be able to direct you to a nearby donation site.
  • Dogs must be maintained on heartworm preventive and must be current with their regular veterinarian's preventive health and vaccination schedule.
  • Please note that some medications may exclude your dog from the blood donor program.    Please contact us for details prior to scheduling an appointment
